Why a hackathon?
Hack (creative problem solving) athon (marathon)
It’s a dedicated weekend to put aside distractions and work in a team to hack solutions: motivated with prizes, deadlines and unlimited refreshments. We’ve got challenges help keep focus and expert mentors to help you stay on track.
Hackathons are an efficient, low risk, low cost way to encourage innovation, catalyse startups and engage talent in the clean energy sector.
Who should attend?
Coders, UX/UI designers, energy experts, engineers, entrepreneurs, product developers, creatives, statisticians, data-lovers, finance gurus interested in creating smart energy solutions.
Successful teams need more a mix of software, energy experts, data analysis experts, product developers and designers and finance or project management wranglers.
You can apply as a team or as an individual. We recommend teams of 3-5 with each member bringing different skills to the table. If you don’t have a team, we will help you connect and create a team at the Design Workshop.

The Challenge
The demand for energy in Asia is growing exponentially, with an increase of 23% in Cambodia last year alone. Currently Cambodia relies on coal and hydropower, as well as imported electricity for its energy needs. As the country increases its electrification, new energy businesses have an opportunity to enter the market and shift the supply, storage and demand towards a cleaner and future. With the development in technology such as AI, machine learning, sensors and monitoring, the potential for creating smart energy solutions has never been better.
How might we design an innovative hardware or software solution that integrates technology into our energy system, to help create access to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy services?

Why Participate?
The Smart Energy Hackathon is an unparalleled opportunity in the heart of Kirirom, bringing expert mentors from clean energy, social development, entrepreneurship and software development backgrounds.
All participants will:
- Have access to the expert mentors across the Hackathon weekend on September 7th & 8th.
- Learn about energy and its challenges in Cambodia
- Discover the ways clean energy, technology and innovation can impact the broader society
- Challenge yourself to create a hardware/software solution in 2 days
- Get a cool T-shirt and water bottle for participating!*
*All participants that signed up before 11:59pm August 24th will receive a T-Shirt and water bottle for their participation.
Getting There
Kirirom Institute of Technology is located approximately 3 hours west from Phnom Penh, in Kampong Speu.
You will need to organize your own transport for both the Hackathon Briefing on August 31st, and the Hackathon weekend on September 7 & 8th.
You will need to organise transport to get to the weekend by 8am on Saturday September 7th, and leaving from 4pm on Sunday September 8th.

Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in the registration.
Kirirom Institute of Technology is located within the vKirirom Resort, which offers a variety of accommodation. You can book your accommodation via the website.
What to Expect
The goal of the hackathon is to work with a team to create a software/hardware solution around Smart Energy.
At the Hackathon Briefing on Saturday August 31st, you will learn about Clean Energy and The Energy Transition in Cambodia. There will also be guided discussions to allow you to explore what area of the Smart Energy challenge you would like to tackle, and to help you find teammates with the same interests. When you leave the briefing, you will have formed a team and decided on a challenge.
On the hackathon weekend, there will be an introduction and reminder of the judging criteria, and you will be encouraged to start on your solution. Expert mentors with different expertise will be around all day, and you will have the opportunity to sign up and have one-on-one time with them. We encourage you to use the mentors as much as you can!
Pitching will happen on Sunday afternoon, and each team will have 3 minutes to present followed by questions from judges. The winners will be announced at 4pm on Sunday.

Think about some ideas that are interesting to you and that you would like to tackle. Will you go for a software or hardware approach? Are you interested in renewable energy, energy efficiency, educating people on the benefits of clean energy, electric vehicles.. or something else? What would be useful to an end user?
Start brainstorming and come prepared with an open mind and the desire to learn from your peers, and build something amazing!
We will have snacks and refreshments, and meals will be served at the KIT canteen to keep you going all weekend.
Bring a laptop if you have one, and any other gadgets and gizmos that you think could be part of your solution.
